Volunteer Protection Act of 1997- con’t.
States may:
- preempt the federal Volunteer Protection Act if a state enacts a law providing additional liability protection for volunteers
- enact a law opting out of coverage under the federal law
- require nonprofit organizations to
- provide mandatory training for volunteers
- be liable for the acts or omissions of their volunteers to the same extent that the organizations are liable for their employees and agents, and
- carry insurance or another source of financial recovery for individuals who may be harmed by their volunteers
